James Onions' 4 H.P. Thoroughbred

James Says ~

There isnt a lot of information in Wendels American Gas Engines about GRAY
The 4HP was called the Thoroughbred.
For some reason the governor on the 4HP is the same as the Termaat & Monahan!
The serial number on the side of the dry cylinder head of my 4HP Gray is , believe it or not, Ser. #3000.
The engine was well used when I got posession of it, mostly because of lack of attention to keeping
the drip lubricator filled and working correctly. The rings were badly warn, but I easily obtained new ones
at the Coolsprings Penn. engine show. The governor arm was replaced with a new one cast locally,
and an arm from a T&M was used as a pattern. A new piston pin was machined and fitted and the shims
from the main bearings and rod bearings were removed. The engine was used to power a "portable"
saw mounted on a horse drawn wagon to saw slab wood into pieces small enough to fit in wood stoves.
Wood slabs came mostly from saw mills in this area, i.e. Muskoka and Algonqin Provincial Park.
